ESG, the UK’s leading provider of testing, inspection and compliance services, has announced Anthony Thorpe as the winner of the inaugural ESG sponsored Geotechnics and Geomechanics Prize for students at Brunel University London.

The fourth year MEng student impressed the judges with a high level of technical knowledge and dedication to furthering his understanding of geotechnical engineering through the project completed for the attainment of his Masters degree.

ESG sponsored the prize with the aim of supporting some of the country’s most promising geotechnical students and helping to develop the careers of future generations of geotechnical engineers. The prize criteria not only considered academic excellence in geotechnics, but also the demonstration of project management skills, initiative and innovation to reward and encourage the development of attributes necessary for the workplace.

Further to the sponsorship of the award, the geotechnical facility at Brunel University London will be renamed ‘The ESG Laboratory’. Members of the ESG team will also provide guest lectures at the university, allowing them to share their experiences of the professional environment with students.

Philip Ball, group technical director, ESG, said: “ESG is a company with a proud and distinguished heritage at the forefront of the geotechnical industry. Supporting future generations of ground engineers is essential for the progress of not only the company, but the industry as a whole. The skills gap presents a challenge that, collectively, we must overcome, and working with universities can help better align education with the requirements of the private sector.

“Brunel is an ideal partner, due to its approach of combining academic rigour with practical and entrepreneurial elements. In addition, the academic staff share ESG’s commitment to the advancement of geotechnics and development of future engineering professionals. Anthony’s project is clear evidence of these high standards and I would like to congratulate him on this fine achievement as well as wish him a long and successful career.”
