SOCOTEC Monitoring Shortlisted for New Civil Engineer Tunnelling Award

    Wed 08/21/2019 - 10:50

SOCOTEC Monitoring, formerly ITM Monitoring, has been confirmed as a finalist in the Innovation in Instrumentation & Monitoring category at this year’s New Civil Engineer (NCE) Tunnelling Awards for the solution devised to monitor the Barking Riverside Extension project.

This category recognises innovation and excellence in site surveying and monitoring on tunnelling projects. To be shortlisted, SOCOTEC Monitoring demonstrated how, on the Barking Riverside Extension project, innovative use of existing instrumentation and monitoring techniques is contributing to an improved outcome for the client, Transport for London.

Under normal circumstances, the monitoring of this kind of asset would require the use of an optical based system. For this project, however, there were several reasons why this solution would not be suitable. Thanks to the technical expertise and extensive field experience of the engineers at SOCOTEC Monitoring, an alternative solution was devised and implemented.

The Innovation in Instrumentation & Monitoring Category is judged live at the NCE Tunnelling Festival, with Sheridan Elliott – SOCOTEC Monitoring’s data acquisition and system integration manager – invited to present to the judging panel on 5 December. In addition to the judging panel, other delegates attending the Festival will have access to this judging session to listen to the live presentations.

Commenting on SOCOTEC Monitoring achieving this recognition, Sheridan Elliott said:

“I was really pleased to hear that our team has been shortlisted for a NCE Tunnelling Award, especially in the Innovation in Instrumentation & Monitoring Category. We work hard to ensure that the solutions we offer clients are fit-for-purpose, whether that means turning to the latest technologies or using existing instrumentation and techniques in new and innovative ways.”

Following the live judging, all the winners will be announced at the highly-regarded Tunnelling Awards, part of the inaugural NCE Tunnelling Festival which celebrates the very best in tunnelling expertise. The awards ceremony takes place on the evening of Thursday 5 December at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London Tower Bridge.
