Fire Safety Engineering for High-Rise Buildings in London

SOCOTEC would like to highlight our work on the 8 Bishopsgate project in the heart of London, United Kingdom.

    Bishopsgate

SOCOTEC would like to highlight our work on the 8 Bishopsgate project in the heart of London, United Kingdom. This striking 51-story skyscraper, developed by Mitsubishi Estate London and Stanhope plc, now stands as the fourth-tallest building in the City of London and twelfth tallest in London, at an impressive height of 204.5 meters (671 ft).

Our team, led by Principal Fire Engineer Tabea Uhr, worked closely with Lendlease Construction to provide essential construction support throughout the project's development. SOCOTEC's involvement spanned several years, showcasing our long-term commitment to ensuring the highest standards of fire safety for complex, high-rise construction sites. We would like to give special thanks to Alan Mason, Construction Manager at Lendlease.

Key services provided by SOCOTEC included:

    • Development and continuing review of a comprehensive construction fire safety strategy; and
    • Regular fire risk assessments conducted by our expert Fire Safety team, led by Wayne Neville.

Throughout the project, our team faced and overcame numerous challenges inherent to high-rise construction, including:

    • Adapting fire safety strategies to accommodate changing site conditions and construction phases
    • Ensuring protection of long horizontal and vertical escape routes, including occupancy load management.
    • Providing strategic compartmentation within the building under construction to safeguard the escape routes and limit fire spread.
