In 2002 ITM, now SOCOTEC Monitoring UK Ltd, was awarded the contract to install instrumentation to monitor the cliff alongside Military Road.
Summary of the works
Client – Isle of Wight Council
Duration 2001 – current
Monitoring System – Settlement Cells, Tiltmeters, VW Extensometers – ARGUS Monitoring Software
The monitoring system comprised of a number of tiltmeters buried alongside the road to monitor for any rotation along with draw wires installed in pairs within galvanised tubes running from alongside the road to positions halfway and 80% of the way to the cliff edge.
All of the monitoring was set to, on alarm, contact the local police station as well as turn on red lights and a warning sign at either end of the section to prevent cars entering the area.
