    Bexhill to Hastings Relief Road

    Geotechnical Monitoring and Partnership Excellence on Hasting Relief Road Project

    A single carriageway road is being constructed along a disused railway line from Bexhill to Hastings in East Sussex in order to ease congestion and improve the air quality along the A259 at Glyne Gap.

    A Hochtief Vinci Joint Venture was awarded the main contract with CJ Pryor appointed to undertake 1million cubic metres of earthworks. To ensure effective placement of these earthworks, ITM Monitoring, now SOCOTEC Monitoring UK Ltd, was contracted by CJ Pryor to monitor settlement, inclination and pore water pressures by installing a range of geotechnical monitoring instruments across the entire route.


    The works comprised of a full rotary coring site investigation on a railway cutting in addition to the drilling of 97 boreholes up to 22m deep with the supply and installation of 30 inclinometers and extensometers, 53 vibrating wire piezometers, 5 standpipe piezometers, 8 deep datums, 4 hydrostatic profile gauges up to 150m long, as well as the supply of 164 settlement plates and 168 settlement pins.

    After the successful installation of the large quantities of instrumentation, ITM Monitoring engineers initially read all the installed instruments manually and then trained engineers from CJ Pryor on how to use the read out equipment. The readings will allow a continued monitoring of settlement, inclination and pore water pressures during this ongoing project.
