Enabling Safe Urban Transformation: SOCOTEC's Comprehensive Monitoring Approach for Blackwall Tunnel Greenwich Peninsula Projec

The Greenwich Peninsula is a significant development from Knight Dragon of over 10,000 homes, 48 acres of green space and 3.5 million square feet of public facilities, along 1.6 miles of Thames water front.

    Summary of works

    Client – Knight Dragon

Contract name – Blackwall Tunnel Greenwich Peninsula
    Start Date – November 2012
    Completion Date – Ongoing
Monitoring System: Automated total stations, EL tilt sensors, and EL Beams, ARGUS Monitoring Software

The regeneration is well underway with the O2 and the Emirates Airline and, as part of the ongoing development work, a hotel complex is to be constructed above the route of the Blackwall Tunnel on the Southern approach.

To ensure that these works don’t impact on the tunnel structure, ITM Monitoring, now SOCOTEC Monitoring UK Ltd, was appointed by Knight Dragon to install a monitoring system to measure for settlement, heave and convergence.  This included the installation, commissioning and monitoring of structural instrumentation installed within the Northbound Blackwall Tunnel, cabled back to data loggers which uploaded the data remotely to our ARGUS Monitoring software for near real time monitoring.
