Embarking on an apprenticeship journey can be both exciting and challenging. SOCOTEC UK, offers apprenticeship programs that promise hands-on experience and valuable learning. But what is it really like to be an apprentice at SOCOTEC? Let's dive into the experiences and insights shared by recent apprentice graduate, Nathan Steele.
What did your programme entail?
My apprenticeship program covered an array of coursework and assessments. I delved into topics like health and safety regulations, data management systems such as LIMS, business management strategies, continuous improvement methodologies, and even the role of a technician within the broader business context. The culmination of my program involved a practical observation of my daily work, a 90-minute verbal assessment to gauge my understanding of the business, and a multiple-choice test.
Who was the training provider and what was the result of your apprenticeship?
Tiro served as my training provider throughout my apprenticeship journey. I'm proud to share that I achieved a distinction in my apprenticeship, a testament to the hard work and dedication I put into the program.
What are your next steps for your career?
As I move forward in my career, I plan to focus my attention inward at SOCOTEC. I believe that the company holds opportunities for further training and development that can help me nurture my career growth.
What accomplishment are you most proud of from your apprenticeship?
Undoubtedly, achieving a distinction in my apprenticeship stands out as a significant accomplishment. There were moments when this achievement seemed beyond my grasp, but through determination and hard work, I managed to overcome challenges and attain this milestone.
What advice would you give to our current apprentices?
A piece of advice I'd like to offer to current apprentices is to establish the habit of consistent logging of your work and seeking assistance from your apprenticeship tutor early on. Procrastination can lead to unnecessary stress down the line. Embracing good habits will make the entire apprenticeship journey smoother and more rewarding.
What is your new job title and what are your responsibilities?
Now, in my new role as a Material Testing Lab Technician, my responsibilities encompass conducting tests on various samples, recording the results, and ensuring the proper maintenance of lab equipment. It's a role that demands attention to detail and a commitment to precision.
Apprenticeships are about more than just learning technical skills; they're a chance to grow, learn, and discover your strengths. This SOCOTEC apprentice's journey is a testament to the highs and challenges that come with such a program. As SOCOTEC continues to shape the future of testing and inspection services, the experiences of apprentices will undoubtedly contribute to refining and enhancing their offerings for aspiring professionals.
