Regardless of their position of responsibility within an organisation, all employees require health and safety training. According to the HSE, training helps employees to identify hazards and control risks within the workplace, thereby preventing incidents, injuries and occupational diseases. It also helps to develop a positive health and safety culture by identifying how organisations could more effectively improve their approach to managing areas of health and safety.
Why is health and safety training important?
Health and safety training is a legal requirement as stated in the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, which requires the reporting of information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure the health and safety of employees. In addition, theManagement of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 identifies situations where health and safety training is particularly important, such as when people start a new job, are exposed to new risks, where specific risks increase and where knowledge/existing skills require updating.
What should be included in health and safety training?
There are a number of areas that should be covered within each and every health and safety training course. Basic components within a standard course should include (but is not limited to):
Individual responsibility
Role of the health and safety representative within the organisation
Relevant health and safety legislation and requirements
Control measures/procedures
Hazard identification and assessment
Reporting and investigating incidents
Training and education.
