Baseline Monitoring Contract for the Silvertown Tunnel Project

    Fri 09/14/2018 - 10:04

ITM Monitoring, a SOCOTEC company, has been awarded baseline monitoring contract for the Silvertown Tunnel project

The new Silvertown Tunnel under the River Thames will connect the Greenwich Peninsula and Silvertown in east London to provide new public transport links as well as alleviate congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel and improve the reliability and resilience of the wider road network.

The 1.4km twin-bore road tunnel will help to support growth and the wider economy across the east and south east London area. Following the Secretary of State’s decision to grant the Development Consent Order, Transport for London is now progressing a range of pre-construction works including baseline structural and environmental monitoring which is required to inform and progress the construction phase.

ITM Monitoring is pleased to be working with Transport for London to provide these critical baseline measurements, which include manual monitoring of the surrounding assets, such as the Emirates Air Line and Docklands Light Railway viaduct. In addition to utilising long-range wireless sensor networks to acquire data and reduce site visits, ITM will be automatically monitoring the Thames river level to correlate movement monitoring data with potential tidal influences. Data will be delivered to the client via ITM’s data visualisation portal – Calyx™ OMS – providing a central repository for instrumentation and monitoring information and automated reporting.

Rhiannon Scott, Bid Manager at ITM Monitoring, comments:

“We are really pleased to be working on this project, which has been awarded to ITM via Transport for London’s
Value Enhancement Specialist Framework Agreement. The framework aims to improve value in TfL’s capacity enhancements through improved efficiency of construction scheme delivery, by liaising with the framework members who represent their engineering specialty. The primary purpose of baseline monitoring is to define the existing behaviour of an asset prior to commencement of intrusive works. In this case, monitoring factors such as seasonal and diurnal thermal effects as well as potential tidal influences in advance of works beginning is vital to allow improvements to be identified and applied to enhance operational delivery.”
