Practical Training Day: Gas and Groundwater Monitoring and Sampling

    Fri 01/17/2025 - 14:59

In July 2024, the GI Geoenvironmental Lead Darren Makin hosted a comprehensive training day at our Coventry office focused on gas and groundwater monitoring and sampling techniques

This training day was a collaborative effort, supported by SOCOTEC colleagues Dave Beskeen and Tom Sheen, and alongside Kayleigh Smith from In Situ who demonstrated some of the In Situ monitoring and sampling equipment. The day was attended by engineers from across our GI teams to help them understand the critical processes involved in monitoring and sampling of groundwater and gases. The training emphasised practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and the importance of adhering to safety and environmental regulations.

    Objectives of the Training

The primary objectives of the training day were to:

    1. Educate Participants: Provide participants with the theoretical knowledge necessary for effective gas and groundwater monitoring and sampling.

    1. Hands-On Experience: Offer practical, hands-on training in sampling techniques and the use of monitoring equipment.

    1. Safety Awareness: Emphasise the importance of following safety procedures when dealing with potentially hazardous materials.

    1. Q&A Opportunities: Create an environment for engineers to share insights, experiences, and ask questions.

    Agenda

The training day was structured to maximise learning through a combination of presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. The agenda included:

    1. Introduction to monitoring and sampling

    • Background understanding of why we monitor and sample gas and groundwater.

    • Overview of the different monitoring and sampling techniques available and when they should be used.

    1. Safety Practices

    • Brief outline of the safety considerations when carrying out monitoring and sampling, including the PPE requirements.

    1. Groundwater Monitoring and Sampling Techniques

    • Practical demonstration and opportunity to use various types of groundwater sampling equipment, including inertia pumps, low flow pumps and hydro sleeve.

    • Demonstration of how to correctly calibrate and use Aquatroll water quality measurement equipment.

    • Demonstration and practical opportunity to use an interface meter and identify the difference between light and dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (NAPL).

    1. Gas Monitoring Techniques

    • Demonstration of how to use gas detection and vapour monitoring equipment, including opportunity for the attendees to try it out for themselves.

    1. Q&A Session

    • Open floor for attendees to ask questions and discuss specific challenges they may face when carrying out gas and groundwater monitoring and sampling.

    Practical Hands-On Activities

The highlight of the training day was the focus on practical application activities, where participants had the opportunity to apply what they had learned to real-life application.

    1. Groundwater Sampling
Following a demonstration, participants conducted groundwater sampling using various techniques. They practiced setting up equipment, collecting samples, and recording the findings according to industry standards.

    1. Gas Monitoring Exercise
Participants utilised a portable gas analyser and Photo Ionisation Detector (PID) to take gas and vapour measurements from the dedicated training installations. They learned how to understand and record the measurements correctly and identify potential issues based on the data collected.

    Feedback and Outcomes

Participants provided positive feedback about the training day, highlighting the valuable blend of theory and opportunity to put what was learned into practice. Many noted that the hands-on exercises enhanced their understanding of monitoring techniques and boosted their confidence when undertaking monitoring and sampling activities.

“The course leaders were concise and understanding. The presentation was clear and the practical equipment use segment was very helpful for first time users.”

“The course helped clarify understanding of how to carry out monitoring and sampling in accordance with standards and internal technical procedures.”

    Conclusion

The gas and groundwater monitoring and sampling training day successfully met its objectives, equipping our engineers with essential skills and knowledge. As environmental monitoring continues to play a crucial role in sustainability efforts, training events like this are vital for building understanding, quality and fostering best practices within the industry.

We look forward to hosting more training opportunities in the future, continuing to support our young professionals to broaden their knowledge and understanding of industry best practice.
