SOCOTEC, the UK’s leading provider of testing, inspection and compliance services, has supported a training day at a local college in Kent with a presentation on concrete quality control.
MidKent College is one of the largest education and training providers in the South East, offering – among others - a range of construction based learning opportunities and programmes.
Organised by The Concrete Society, the training day at the Maidstone Campus saw Level 3 Construction & Built Environment students engage with members of The Concrete Society and get involved with a number of practical demonstrations and presentations.
To support the students’ learning, Clive Moore, client liaison manager, attended the training day on behalf of SOCOTEC to deliver a presentation on structural compliance investigation and the importance of quality control in concrete.
Discussions took place around the reasons why materials are tested - to measure properties, compare results, predict performance and reduce risk - as well as the importance of site control and monitoring. A presentation was also given on the different assessment methods for structural compliance investigation, such as test cores, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity, Windsor Probe, Internal Fracture, and Rebound Hammer.
Roger Rattue, commercial/technical director, Materials Testing Division, SOCOTEC, commented:
“At SOCOTEC, it is really important for us to share our knowledge with the younger generations, to enhance their learning and support their career progression within the construction industry.
“This type of training day gave us the opportunity to talk to students about quality control of concrete on site, the ramification of what happens if it goes wrong and the best way to resolve any problems. This was our first year supporting students at MidKent College, but we’ve previously presented at Greenwich University for a number of years.”
As the largest concrete testing company in the UK, SOCOTEC offers nationwide coverage for materials testing. Covering the South of England, SOCOTEC’s Uxbridge office provides concrete quality control, structural investigations, infrastructure materials testing and on-site sampling and inspection.
The Concrete Society is an independent technical organisation with a broad membership base that includes professional engineers and designers; the contracting and material supply industry, academia and client bodies from over 60 countries.
