SOCOTEC Proudly Partners as Headline Sponsor for the 2024 Annual Glossop Award

    Mon 01/20/2025 - 10:26

SOCOTEC UK served as the headline sponsor for the 2024 Glossop Award, which is part of the annual Glossop Event organised by the Engineering Group of the Geological Society (EGGS).

The celebration took place on Thursday, 21 November 2024, at the Royal Institution in London, with an evening reception following at The Geological Society, Burlington House.

The event was attended by Amelia Standen, GI TechTeam Coordinator, Kevin Willfratt, Operations Manager and Ross Lawton, Project Manager. Amelia is also a member of the EGGS subcommittee who organised the event.

The Glossop Award is given to an emerging professional who demonstrates exceptional commitment and passion for engineering geology, showcased through a presentation to a panel of judges. The 2024 recipient, Jordan Weddepohl from Arup, presented on the “UK Levelised Cost of Geothermal Energy.” His detailed analysis covered the carbon and cost-saving benefits of geothermal energy, along with an overview of how the technology works.

Following the presentation of the Glossop Award, the recipient of the Glossop Medal delivered a lecture. The medal is awarded to an individual in recognition of their career-long contributions to engineering geology. This recipient, Dr. Mark Lee, Geomorphologist from Ebor Geosciences, presented on "Landslide Risk Assessment: Radical Uncertainty and Engineering Geomorphology." Dr. Lee's lecture took the audience through the evolution of landslide risk assessment, highlighting the many influencing factors. He also offered a compelling analogy comparing the various probabilities of Manchester United winning the Premier League, depending on the perspective taken.

This esteemed event honours Rudolph Glossop and his lifelong contributions to engineering geology, with the inaugural ceremony held in 1997. Rudolph Glossop was a highly respected figure in the industry and co-founded Soil Mechanics in 1943, a company that evolved into the ground investigation division of SOCOTEC UK we know today. This legacy is reflected in the name of the former Wokingham office building, "Glossop House."

    Our legacy:

    1943 to 2005: Soil Mechanics

2005 to 2017: Environmental Scientifics Group

    2017 to present: SOCOTEC UK

We wish to extend our earnest congratulations and thanks to both Jordan Weddepohl and Dr Mark Lee for their excellent presentations on the night and the Engineering Group of the Geological Society for putting on an exceptional evening.
