Our Structures and Pavements division delivers specialist services to support projects across the UK’s infrastructure sector. From highways and rail networks to historic landmarks and modern structures, we provide expert assessment, testing, and analysis to ensure compliance, safety, and longevity at every stage of the project lifecycle.
Our coatings and engineering team provide specialist technical advice for corrosion protection, ensuring project durability and compliance with our specialist paint application witnessing, failure analysis, and accelerated weathering testing. We offer wet paint testing and approvals for major clients like Network Rail and National Highways, supported by our UKAS-accredited services (certificate 0001).We also offer consultancy throughout coating application schemes, from helping to write specifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and offering ongoing support post-application.
Concrete Fixings
Our specialist teams perform pull-out and shear load testing using hydraulic rigs to measure movement in test pieces. We adhere to British Standards (BS 8539:2012) and Construction Fixings Association guidance, testing anchor bolts, rebar, remedial wall ties, material bond strength, and tile adhesion up to 250kN.
Highways Surveys
We offer 4K Video and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) highway surveys at real traffic speed, eliminating the need for costsly traffic management. Our services provide asset surveys, inventory management, visual condition assessments, PAS2161 RCM and retroreflectivity of signs, lines and roadstuds. All of which aid in road construction planning and execution.
At SOCOTEC UK, our expertise, advanced technology, and accredited testing services ensure that your structures and pavements remain safe, compliant, and built to last.
Utility Coring
On-site coring investigation of utility reinstatement works are undertaken and completed alongside laboratory Air Void testing ensure compliance with the requirements of the SROH (England & Wales) and SROR (Scotland).
Structures and Pavements
Our Approach
Structural Investigations
We offer an extensive range of intrusive and non-intrusive techniques to confirm the condition of different infrastructure assets such as bridges, residential and commercial buildings, retaining walls, and industrial facilities. This helps our clients prioritise maintenance and ensure regulatory compliance in construction projects. The techniques include the following:
Concrete condition testing (including half-cell potential, cover meter survey, resistivity, depth of carbonation, visual / delamination survey)
Ferroscanning / GPR – to confirm reinforcement detail and material thickness
Reinforcement breakouts to confirm condition
Concrete and masonry coring
Post-tension special inspection (PTSI)
Schmidt/ Rebound hammer testing
Waterproofing analysis
NDT (Ultrasonic Testing)
Endoscope Survey
These investigations are supported by our in-house UKAS accredited laboratories, who assist with testing samples for compressive strength and chemistry testing.
Pavement Investigations
We work with highways authorities, local authorities, contractors, DBFO companies, and airport operators to provide expert pavements analysis. Our services include:
Pavement Coring
Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) surveys
Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) Testing
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
Construction materials testing & certification
Our dedicated teams also provide expert witness services for dispute resolution and technical evaluations, supporting road construction projects with reliable data.
