The use of a Cobra hydro cyclone separator and filter can be a major asset in maintaining the cleanliness of closed water and glycol systems by removing corrosive matter, sludge and debris which are the major problems associated with closed circuit systems.

In closed water and glycol systems the interiors of heat exchangers and pipes are rarely seen. Problems such as corrosion, scaling and fouling can cause high energy consumption and poor heat transfer.

All closed water circuits, including heating systems, can be negatively affected by the presence of suspended solids. These solids will:

    • Provide a source of nutrients for microbes
    • Increase erosion within essential components
    • Increase the risk of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC)
    • “Mop up” expensive corrosion inhibitors
    • Decrease efficiencies on heat exchange surfaces

Cobra Cyclone Filter and Separators - How It Works

Driven by the inlet pressure, the water or liquid with particles enters the top chamber at a tangent causing a rotation, and accelerates through the tangential slots/holes in the top section of the separator, down into the centre section of the separator, causing rapid rotation within the centre sector.

The rotation of the liquid forms a vortex in the centre of the separator. The centrifugal action forces the separation of heavy particles from the water. The separated particles accumulate in the bottom collection chamber where they are periodically purged. The cleaned water flows through the central vortex from the top of the cyclone.

    Continuous improvement

With the Building Services industry in mind, SOCOTEC’s improved design for the high pressure units means they are now capable of up to 40 bar, whereas units are normally designed to operate at system pressures of up to 10 bar.  SOCOTEC can provide cyclones in different materials of construction (carbon steel, stainless steel, coated carbon steel and duplex steel).

Incorporating the in-line CRS dirt collection units, the Cobra Cyclone units do not require filter elements and can therefore provide a low-maintenance filtration method without the cleaning costs and down time associated with other conventional methods.

With these improvements to SOCOTEC’s Cobra Cyclone units, we can now offer clients a fully packaged filtration system that has the ability to remove solids down to 20 micron, and then continuous progressive removal down to 5 micron.
