Transforming Derbyshire’s Industrial Landscape: SOCOTEC’s Award-Winning Efforts at the Avenue Coking Works

We’re proud to spotlight our team’s essential role in the remediation of the Avenue Coking Works site in Chesterfield, Derbyshire—an achievement recently recognised with a prestigious Brownfield Briefing Award. Once a hub for coking and chemical production, this 98-hectare site was heavily contaminated, presenting formidable environmental challenges, including an asbestos waste tip and tar lagoons. The mission: turn it into a safe, revitalised space ready for residential development and natural habitats.

Our multi-disciplinary team provided comprehensive support throughout the project, from geo-environmental sampling and ground testing to groundwater monitoring and occupational health oversight. Our specialists on the ground ensured seamless collaboration and continuous data-driven management, leading the way in safety, compliance, and efficiency.
