As a water purification technology, Reverse Osmosis (RO) units can remove molecules, ions and salts from water by applying pressure to the flow of water and pushing it through semi permeable membrane.
The RO process
In the Reverse Osmosis process, water passes through a semi permeable membrane to a diluted solution leaving behind suspended particles, colloids, bacteria, viruses and salt. To achieve this, pressure must be applied to the water - often using a high pressure pump - to push the water molecules through the membrane. Salts and other contaminants do not pass through and are filtered out via waste stream.
Reverse Osmosis is used for a range of applications, such as:
Sea Water Desalination
Ultra-pure water production for semiconductor industry
Purifying water for the pharmaceutical and medical industries
Leachate treatment - to remove toxic organics, heavy metals, nitrates
Wastewater treatment
Data centre cooling water
Steam raising boiler feed
Operation and Maintenance
Manufactured in-house, our RO systems are designed and built to meet the requirements of the client. In addition to providing and installing RO units, SOCOTEC also offers preventative maintenance on your unit. Our membrane monitoring service can minimise the risk of fouling or scaling in the high pressure environment, to ensure the RO unit operates efficiently.
