In conjunction with Maidenhead Waterways Restoration Group, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead aimed to restore the waterways running through Maidenhead town centre.
The waterways were enlarged in the 1960s to act as a flood defence for the town, but with completion of the Jubilee River in the 1990s they became neglected and overgrown. In 2012 the Maidenhead Waterways Restoration Group achieved planning permission for restoration.
The disused channels have now been converted into a valuable amenity for boat and water-related activities, walking and cycling. The project has contributed to the rejuvenation of Maidenhead, alongside the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) and other large commercial developments.
